5. What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a public link that opens the digital label of a model, a batch or a single product. It was introduced by the EU’s ESPR regulation, which entered into force in 2024 and gradually makes it mandatory — product group by product group, starting with textiles, steel and batteries — for manufacturers to declare a product’s traceability and sustainability data: raw-material origin, components, manufacturing processes, carbon footprint and end-of-life instructions.
6. What is the ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation)?
The ESPR is the EU regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1781) that sets ecodesign and sustainability requirements for products sold in the EU, including the obligation to provide a Digital Product Passport. It entered into force on 18 July 2024, and its 2025–2030 working plan (adopted 16 April 2025) defines which product groups will be regulated first.
7. Who needs to comply with the Digital Product Passport?
Any economic operator that places a covered product on the EU market must comply — primarily manufacturers, but also importers and authorised representatives. Obligations apply product group by product group, defined through ESPR delegated acts, so a company’s exact deadline depends on the category of products it makes or sells.
8. When does the Digital Product Passport become mandatory?
There is no single date: the DPP becomes mandatory gradually, product group by product group, through ESPR delegated acts expected from 2027 onward, each with a 12–18 month transition. The first delegated acts are expected for iron and steel (indicatively 2026), followed by textiles and apparel, tyres and aluminium (indicatively 2027). The Digital Battery Passport is the firmest deadline: mandatory from 18 February 2027.
9. Which products will need a Digital Product Passport first?
The first products in scope are those prioritised in the ESPR 2025–2030 working plan: textiles and apparel, furniture, mattresses and tyres among final products, plus iron, steel and aluminium as intermediate products. Batteries are already covered separately by the EU Battery Regulation, with a battery passport mandatory from February 2027.
10. What data does a Digital Product Passport contain?
A DPP typically contains the product’s unique identifier, material and substance composition, recycled content, origin and supply-chain data, repairability and spare-part information, environmental footprint where required, and end-of-life and recycling instructions. The exact data fields are set by each product group’s ESPR delegated act, so requirements vary by category.
11. How is a Digital Product Passport different from EPREL?
EPREL is the EU’s energy-labelling database, limited to energy-related products and focused on energy efficiency. A Digital Product Passport is broader: it covers many product categories under the ESPR and stores full lifecycle, material and circularity data, not just energy class. The two systems coexist — a product can appear in EPREL and also require a DPP.
12. Do non-EU manufacturers need a Digital Product Passport to sell in the EU?
Yes. Any product placed on the EU market must comply with the ESPR and carry a Digital Product Passport when its product group is in scope, regardless of where it is manufactured. Non-EU manufacturers usually meet the obligation through their EU importer or an authorised representative, who is responsible for making the DPP available.
13. How do manufacturers create and issue a Digital Product Passport?
Manufacturers create a DPP by collecting product and supplier data (materials, composition, certificates, origin), structuring it to the required standard, and publishing it behind a QR code or data carrier on the product. 14. Do jewelry, watch and luxury brands need a Digital Product Passport?
Jewelry and watches are not yet named in the first ESPR working plan, so a DPP is not legally mandatory for them today. However, many luxury, jewelry and watch brands are adopting Digital Product Passports voluntarily — for material traceability, anti-counterfeiting and proof of provenance — and because their retail and brand partners increasingly require DPP-compatible data. Early adoption also prepares them for future ESPR coverage.
